Conscious Discipline: Creating Emotional Intelligent Schools Where Social and Academice Skills Soar
Conscious Discipline® is a comprehensive classroom management program that integrates social emotional learning into academics, promotes character education, and creates a positive school climate.

This all happens by changing our perception of and response to everyday conflicts. Nationwide, schools utilizing Conscious Discipline® experience immediate benefits including a significant reduction in discipline referrals, classrooms running in an orderly manner, children who are intrinsically motivated, bullying being replaced by kindness, and joy returning to teachers' hearts. This workshop will give participants an overview of Conscious Discipline® and the successes that are possible with its implementation.

Sit still, pay attention, and look at me: Understanding and developing attention skills in all children
The ability to filter out distractions and sustain attention to tasks that may have little or no personal meaning is a difficult skill for many of us. Often, out of lack of knowledge and frustration, we resort to demanding a child's attention (Sit Still and Look at Me). Sometimes we fall into the belief that if we can have them sit still and pay attention In circle time for ten minutes when they are two years old that they will be prepared for a 20 minute circle time at age four. Attention is a complex skill that does not develop through stamina training. This session will provide you with the knowledge of how
attention develops, interventions for the "fidgeting, impulsive, I can't wait" children as well as fun activities and games which will optimize the deveiopment of attention for the children in your classroom.

In this workshop you will learn:
The underlying neurophysiology behind impulsiveness, distraction, and aggression, PLUS what to do about it.

Early Brain Development - Birth through Four and Building the Reading Brain

Presenter: Tammy Shepherd

Registration fee: $175, ($150 for Texas ASCD members)

Workshop overview:
With the rapidly expanding increase of knowledge about how the brain grows and develops, early childhood educators can align developmentally appropriate lessons with critical periods.  The development of vision, language, emotions, and intelligence are explored.

The human brain is biologically organized for speaking not for reading.  Using new findings from neuroscience, educators can support young developing brains to become reading brains.  Strategies that have been substantiated by neurological studies will be shared.  A brief, non-technical overview of early brain development will be included. The foundation for reading begins at birth!

Tammy Shepherd works as a consultant and presenter on the topic of neuroeducation. She has written and presented informative, engaging, and thought provoking workshops on enhancing student achievement  for the past 10 years.  With 30 years of experience in public schools as a science teacher, counselor, administrator and now completing a doctoral study in the area of Brain Research as it relates to teaching and learning, Tammy bridges practical experience with researched perspectives on how we can enhance learning in today’s diverse classrooms.

Workshops are designed to be interactive and engaging as they enhance the important work of educating all students by supporting those who teach them.  We are teaching students today to live, learn, and work in a world of tomorrow that is unknown and expanding exponentially.  The best approach is to prepare students who think, evaluate, explore, and create.  Although the world is rapidly changing, the biology of the brain is not. We now understand the brain better! Neuroeducation is a natural connection between a love for learning, the science of learning, and a commitment to making instructional practice effective, enjoyable, and research-based.
