Strategy Toolbox
is a six-hour workshop which defines and reviews the concept of the
strategic teaching of reading, especially content-area reading, from a
metacognitive point of view. The "toolbox" itself is introduced as a
method for helping teachers organize the strategies that they have
already found effective and which they have determined meet the
criteria to be designated a true strategy. The toolbox is flexible and
can be updated periodically, as the teacher finds new effective
strategies and/or removes old, no-longer-used ones. During the
workshop, teachers also have the opportunity to pick up new strategies
from their colleagues. Each strategy card placed in the toolbox
contains a description of the strategy, a research-based rationale for
using it, and an explanation of the procedures for carrying out the
strategy. All strategies are held up to the criterion of the "Crucial
Question: As a direct result of using this strategy, what can my
students do now that they couldn't do before?" Thus assessment is seen
as a critical component of the process. The workshop closes by
directing teachers' thinking toward coaching students to take ownership
of the strategies themselves, thus becoming strategic readers, as well
as developing a systemized method to allow teachers to continue to
share and encourage one another in the use of the toolbox and in
strategic teaching in general.
