Summary: 6 + 1 Trait Writing is the cornerstone of a complete writing program. It is designed to complement the writing process approach by providing an analytic model for writing assessment and instruction. This approach gives teachers a model for responding to students' writing, allows students to evaluate their own work, and provides both teachers and students a common vocabulary for talking and thinking about writing. The essence of the model is an analytic rubric that explains the six traits that define quality writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. This rubric is totally compatible with the TAKS writing rubric and will prepare students to do well on the state assessment.

Advantages to Using the 6 + 1 Trait Writing Approach

  • Prepares students for TAKS!
  • Teaches criteria for quality
  • Gives teachers and students a common language for instruction and assessment
  • Simplifies revision
  • Works with grades 3-High School
  • Fits any instructional framework
  • Supports the writing process
  • Helps students evaluate their writing

This workshop gives teachers a thorough understanding of the traits, the correlation between TAKS and the traits, strategies for teaching the traits and sample student papers to use in instruction. Kris Reid is recognized as a regional trainer by the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory.
